Pre tour extension

Begin on the Island of Malta, where you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner to meet your fellow travellers.

Stay: Two Nights: Valletta, Grand Hotel Excelsior or similar

This morning, embark on a city sightseeing tour of Valletta, Malta’s capital, to learn about the fascinating history of this small island. Walk through Valletta’s main city gate and along Republic Street, where you will admire the contrasting architecture of Malta’s modern parliamentary building and the Royal Opera House. Visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens with commanding views over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities – Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua. Next, visit St Johns Co-Cathedral, where many knights and Grand Masters are buried. Here, we also view Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Beheading of St. John The Baptist. This afternoon, visit Villa Bologna, a stately Maltese home built in the opulent Baroque style. Explore its grand Mediterranean garden, which features centuries-old citrus orchards, magnificent fountains and sweeping lawns.

This morning, explore Palazzo Parisio, formerly known as Scicluna Palace. The property began as a hunting lodge and boasts lofty halls lined with Maltese and Italian art and frescoes. The Italianate walled gardens offer a kaleidoscope of colours and scents, with Citrus, Bougainvilleas, and towering palms. Next, take a tour of the fortified city of Mdina, which served as the island’s capital from antiquity up until the medieval period. Explore the narrow alleyways and see the beautiful architecture of this fascinating city. We will also visit the 13th-century Palazzo Falson, the former home of Captain Olof Frederick Gollcher, an artist, soldier, collector and philanthropist. Back in Valletta, we prepare to board our ship, the MS Hebridean Sky for our cruise of the Mediterranean.
