Tokyo to Kyoto

Depart Tokyo Narita International Airport at 10am or the Imperial Hotel at 11.30am to explore Tokyo. Visit Meiji Shrine, an oasis of serenity surrounded by over 100,000 trees which will be displaying beautiful autumn leaves. Later visit Shinjuku Gyoen Park, a typical Japanese landscape garden.

Stay: Tokyo, Imperial Hotel

This morning take a bullet train from Tokyo to Niigata. On arrival enjoy a visit to Yahiko Park which covers an expansive 13 hectares. The section of the park known as Maple Valley is famed throughout Niigata as one of the best places to see autumn leaves. Also visit Yahiko Shrine Chrysanthemum Festival where beautiful chrysanthemum flowers will be in full bloom under the clear autumn sky. This is Niigata’s biggest flower exhibition in both variety and number. You can see 4,000 displays of lovingly and carefully raised chrysanthemum flowers. Later transfer to the port and embark MS Caledonian Sky. Enjoy a special Welcome Dinner as we set sail this evening.

Aside from the temples and fishing villages, the island is best-known for the world-famous Kodo group of taiko drummers, which you’ll witness during today excursion. Later visit Momijiyama Park, where you can take in the stunning autumn hues.

From the port of Toyama, set off this morning for Kurobe Gorge, a beautiful, forested ravine in the rugged mountains of the Northern Japan Alps. Cut by the Kurobe River, it is one of the deepest gorges in Japan. Its steep, nearly vertical cliffs and untouched virgin forests make for a perfect setting to see the autumn colours. Explore the gorge on a scenic train winding along the 20 kilometre track that crosses more than 20 bridges and passes through more than 40 tunnels.

Spend the morning at the Omicho Market, finding everything from flowers to fish and local handicrafts. Later, visit the famed Kenroku-en Garden, ranked among the country’s top gardens. Wander beneath blushing arbours, over bridges and along serene pathways. Later, visit Higashi Chaya Gai Geisha District, where traditional forms of the town remain, tracing back to the samurai era. Here, see many of the city’s famous hand-crafted items.

On your second day in Kanazawa, travel to Shirakawa-go and neighbouring Gokayama regions of the Shogawa River Valley. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, the area is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. After exploring a traditional Edo period house, head up to the Tenshukaku Observatory for stunning views of the village below that will be showcasing some of the spectacular autumn foliage. Later, in Gokayama, see the time-honoured tradition of Washi paper making.

From Sakaiminato travel to Adachi Museum of Art, which has attracted international renown for its adjoining garden which is considered a masterpiece of modern design. The garden has won many awards and accolades. It is a work of ‘natural art’ and designed not to be entered, but to be admired from various vantage points. Afterwards travel to the valley of Mt Daisen to see the spectacular autumn foliage.

This morning visit Hagi, one of Japan’s most beautiful castle towns, where you can explore the old streets, the Hagi Castle ruins, Shizuki Park and Tokoji Temple. Japan’s revolution began here in Jokamachi’s old Samurai residential quarter, where a guided tour includes a visit to a Samurai’s home. Also visit a Daisho temple, located on Mount Mison on the island of Itsukushima, and the resting place of many members of the Mori daimyo, who were powerful and territorial pre-modern Japanese lords. Inside, you will find a flame that is said to have been burning for 1,200 years.

Set off on a full-day excursion to Kyongju, a World Heritage-listed site often described as the world’s finest open-air museum. As the ancient capital of the Shilla dynasty, Kyongju’s heritage dates back to the first millennium. Enjoy a stroll through some of the numerous excavated monuments, temples, tombs and pagodas, and there will be time to explore the National Museum, with its exceptional collection of finely worked gold jewellery, metal weapons and pottery. At lunch, sample Korean delicacies followed by a special cultural performance of traditional dance.

From the port of Ube, your first stop today is the five-storied Pagoda of Rurikoji Temple. As you wander through the surrounding park, you’ll wonder how this magnificent structure has stood the test of time since 1442. Later, at the Fujigochi Tea Plantation, you’ll see where the local Ono Tea is produced. The rolling green countryside is indeed a beautiful sight in itself.

In Hiroshima, visit the compelling Peace Memorial Park. The park is dotted with memorials, including the cenotaph that contains the names of all the known victims of the A-bomb. Return to the ship for lunch, then continue on to Miyajima to see one of Japan’s scenic wonders, the scarlet Torii Gate*, the giant camphor wood gates at the entrance to the Shinto Shrine. We will go ashore to explore the World Heritage-listed Itsukushima Jinja Shrine, founded in the sixth century with a backdrop of autumn colours.

Today we visit Ritsurin Park, a 350-year-old garden. It is often suggested that it deserves a spot on the list of the three most beautiful gardens of Japan. Later, we travel by coach to Korakuen Garden, one of Japan’s most significant gardens – the name meaning ‘garden of pleasure after’. Here we visit a classic Japanese teahouse with views over the garden.

Venture inside the walls of World Heritage-listed Himeji Castle, one of the few remaining feudal-era fortresses. Later, at the Koko-en Japanese garden, stroll across bridges arching over koi-filled ponds.

Arrive this morning into Kobe where you will be transferred from the ship to Kyoto. Kyoto was the former Imperial capital of Japan and is now ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities. Soak up the tranquil natural beauty of this peaceful place. Visit one of Kyoto’s famous temples, Ginkakuji, and see the autumn colours from the Philosopher’s Walk in Kyoto.
