Edinburgh to Tromso

This morning, arrive in to Edinburgh where you’ll be met at the airport. Travel to Glamis Castle, childhood home of the Queen Mother and birthplace of Princess Margaret before arriving in Aberdeen to board your luxury small ship, the MS Hebridean Sky.

Spend the day in Scrabster, the most northerly port on the Scottish mainland. This morning visit the castle and gardens of Mey, which was purchased by the Queen Mother in 1952, for use as a holiday home. This afternoon enjoy a scenic drive to Dunnet Bay, home to many seabirds and unusual flora, which you will discover on a guided walk. At Dunnet Head, see the lighthouse, built by Robert Stevenson, and enjoy the views over to Orkney.

This morning in the Shetland capital of Lerwick, you may choose a Freedom of Choice option. Freedom of Choice Perhaps visit to the archaeological site of Jarlshof which was uncovered by a violent storm in the winter of 1896. Alternatively, explore Lerwick, wandering through its narrow stone lanes and visit the excellent Shetland Museum, or you may also choose to travel to a private garden nearby to learn about gardening in the Shetland Islands.

Your ship docks in Norway this morning in the port of Stavanger. On shore, visit the island garden of Flor and Fjaere. This remarkable 13 acre garden has many exotic plantings which is most unusual for its northern location. Freedom of Choice: This afternoon in Haugesund you have the choice to visit a private garden, visit the Rex Garden with its many rhododendrons in Sveio, or see the Arquebus War History Museum.

Spend a full day in Norway’s premier art city, Bergen. Freedom of Choice options are available both in the morning and the afternoon. Freedom of Choice: This morning you will have a choice of an architecture tour taking in Ole Bull’s House and Garden with a private music recital, or a visit to the fine arts museum KODE 3, or alternatively travel to Arna to tour Norway’s only knitting factory, Oleana. This afternoon you can choose to take part in a city sightseeing tour of Bergen with a visit to Damsgård Mansion and Garden, or take an architectural walk through the city with a visit to the Hanseatic Museum, one of the oldest wooden buildings in Bergen.

Spend this morning enjoying the spectacular fjord scenery as your ship cruises through Sognefjorden, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. This afternoon in the old artist village of Balestrand you may choose to do the cultural village walk ending at The Cider House which is situated in an orchard containing a hundred different varieties of apple, pear, plum, apricot, cherry and grapes.

This morning take a journey on one of the most dramatic train rides in Europe, The Flam Railway. View waterfalls and mountain peaks from the nostalgic wooden interior of your carriage. Later, tour Borgund Stave Church and Laerdal, one of the most distinctive stave churches in Norway.

The town of Ålesund has been voted one of Norway’s most beautiful towns and is known for its art nouveau architecture. Join our guide for a walking tour with an artist’s impression of the town and its architecture. This afternoon, arrive in Molde, the town of roses. We visit Romsdal Open-Air Museum in the ‘green corridor’ of Molde. The Museum contains a collection of more than 40 buildings (barns, farm houses, stables, workshops, etc.) dating from the 16th - 20th centuries and offers an opportunity to see the grass roofed houses Norway is famous for.

Today in Trondheim visit Ringve Manor House Museum, Norway’s national museum of musical instruments with a collection of about 1,800 instruments. Surrounding the museum is the Botanical Garden spanning 13 hectares including six main collections, as well as ornamental plantings.

This morning dock in Torghatten, the mountain with a hole in it. Travel to Bronnoysund to a farm with a rich Viking history and a magnificent garden with over 400 types of herbs, 100 varieties of roses and 1,000 species of cactus.
