Day 1. Arrive New Plymouth

Upon arrival you will be met at New Plymouth airport and transferred to your hotel. This evening enjoy a Welcome Dinner at 7pm to meet your Botanical Guide and fellow travellers.

Day 2. Taranaki Garden Spectacular and Private Gardens

This morning enjoy your first day amongst the private and public gardens of the Taranaki Garden Spectacular. Explore delightful gardens nestling on the slopes of majestic Mt. Taranaki, either with your Botanical Guide or on your own. You will travel in comfort exploring a diverse range of gardens.

Day 3. Taranaki Garden Spectacular and Private Gardens

Continue on your botanical exploration of the highlights of the private and public gardens of the Taranaki region. Each garden is different, but inspirational and you can see the history and development of each one.

Day 4. Wellington. Visit more festival gardens before leaving Taranaki

On the way to Wellington enjoy views of Lake Mangamahoe and travel through the coastal towns of Hawera, Wanganui and Paraparaumu before arriving early afternoon.

Day 5. Wellington and Private Garden Visit

Visit a private garden this morning and the Botanic Gardens of Wellington before having this afternoon at leisure. Perhaps you might like to visit Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, referred to by some as Australasia’s most visited museum, located on Wellington’s beautiful waterfront.

Day 6. InterIslander Ferry – Picton and Blenheim

Today you’ll enjoy one of the world’s most scenic voyages as the InterIslander ferry traverses Cook Strait through the breathtaking landscape of Marlborough and Queen Charlotte Sounds. Weave through unspoilt islands and admire coastlines defined by tiny coves on the way to Picton. Arrive into the heart of New Zealand’s wine growing region, Marlborough. Enjoy dinner at your hotel.

Day 7. Marlborough Gardens

Today experience the beauty of the Marlborough region’s gardens including the renowned Hortensia House and Upton Oaks Garden.

Day 8. Christchurch

This morning we depart for Flaxmere Garden located at the foothills of Lake Sumner Forest Park. Enjoy lunch at Flaxmere Garden before continuing onto Christchurch arriving mid-afternoon.

Day 9. Ohinetahi Garden, Christchurch

Spend the day at leisure in the Garden City. This evening enjoy dinner at 6.30pm.

Day 11. Akaroa and Private Gardens

Today journey down to the picturesque harbour village of Akaroa. Visit a private garden with stunning views out over the ocean before enjoying some time at leisure in Akaroa. On your way back to Christchurch, stop at a private garden set on 3.5 hectares that prides itself in excellence in design, planting and maintenance.

Day 12. Canterbury Plains

Traverse the Canterbury Plains and admire the stunning alpine scenery of rugged mountain peaks. Travel via Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru to Dunedin, with a visit to the charitable trust garden of Alan Trott along the way. Visit the Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden - a tribute to the author and rosarian.

Day 13. Dunedin

Day 14. Dunedin and Te Anau

Day 16. Queenstown Garden

Day 17. Queenstown and Auckland

After breakfast be transferred to the airport for your flight to Auckland. After arrival, visit a private garden outside the city.

Day 18. Ayrlies Garden and Private Garden

Today visit Ayrlies Garden, described by Monty Don as one of the most beautiful in the world. Admire the plantings using the borrowed landscape and the owner’s passion to create this masterpiece. Later, visit a private garden in East Auckland.

Day 19. Eden Garden and Waiheke Island

This morning visit the Eden Garden, created out of a disused quarry in the heart of Auckland. Travel by ferry to the Island of Waiheke to visit the stunning winery and garden of Mudbrick Vineyard where we will enjoy lunch with views over the bay.

Botanical Guide - Judy Horton

  • Judy Horton is a much awarded horticulturist who has been a radio garden adviser for more than 25 years. She gives talks, writes gardening articles and books, and has been responsible for six updates of the best-selling Yates Garden Guide. She is a keen gardener and is currently horticultural editor for the Garden Clubs of Australia’s magazine Our Gardens.
