Montreal to Washington

We will meet you on arrival in Montreal and transfer you, along maple-lined boulevards resplendent in fall colours, to the port where you will board the luxurious Seabourn Quest. This evening you will meet your Botanical Guide and fellow Botanica guests. Enjoy your first onboard dinner as your ship sails north along the St Lawrence River towards Quebec City.

This morning the charming arboretum-city of Quebec will greet you with a spectacular display of autumn foliage. Enjoy a special tour of the private garden of La Seigneurie de I’ile d’Orleans. Considered one of Canada’s most beautiful private gardens, explore its six themed gardens spread out over 10 hectares and look out for rare and unusual plants. Afterwards, a sightseeing tour will introduce you to the highlights of Québec’s rich history.

Your ship will spend the day moored in Quebec, so enjoy free time to explore more of this heavily French-influenced city. Old Quebec, close to the harbour is a World Heritage listed area that is famous for its grand Notre-Dame Basilica, the Citadel fortress overlooking Battlefield Park plus the Quartier Petit-Champlain shopping district with its charming stone buildings housing cafes, bars and boutiques. The city’s beloved maple trees of every variety including Sugar, Silver and Norway, as well as Ash, Elm and Linden trees will be aglow with their red and golden fall hues.

Breathtaking views abound today as you cruise the Saguenay River, boarded by dramatic cliffs which create some of Canada’s most stunning natural scenery. Along the banks watch the autumn leaf colours transform the landscape as you head further north. The Saguenay is noted for its majestic fjords and phenomenal wildlife, including a variety of whales, seals and birds. Arriving in to the seaside town of Saguenay, you will disembark and explore one of its outstanding gardens.

Today your ship will continue cruising north along the St Lawrence Seaway to the Gulf of St Lawrence, the world’s largest estuary and home to a known ten species of whales including giant blue whales, humpbacks, sperm whales and belugas. Autumn is the perfect time for whale watching and the further north you head, the better chance you have of seeing a blue whale.

Today’s touring will have a culinary flavour as we explore the towns and villages of the Illes De La Madeline and sample their produce. Try the local cheese at the Pied-de-Vent Cheese Factory and visit the Fumoir d’Antan Museum and smokehouse where you can taste the region’s famous smoked herring. Finish with a glass of freshly brewed beer at Cap aux-Meules island’s cottage brewery. Enjoy the rugged island landscape and admire the colourfully painted houses, some lived in by generations of families of Scottish and French descent.

Today your ship arrives at Prince Edward Island. Set off on a tour of Charlottetown, which will include a visit to the homestead made famous by the fictional heroine Anne of Green Gables. At the harbourside, estate of Beaconsfield House explore the Victorian interiors and elegant gardens.

Arrive into Sydney, Nova Scotia, the gateway to the stunning Cape Breton coastline. Here you’ll be taken on a tour of the island including Cape Breton Highlands National Park. This morning your ship docks in Boston harbour, the site of the infamous ‘Boston Tea Party’. Disembark and we will set off on a sightseeing tour learning about the people, places and events that sparked the American Revolution. You will also get to spend time in the Boston Public Garden where the fall colours will be on display. This afternoon, cross into New York State and check in to your hotel in the Poughkeepsie area.

Today set off for Hyde Park, including a visit to Springwood, the estate of Franklin D. Roosevelt, America’s only four-term president. See the secret walled Beatrix Ferrand garden and visit Eleanor Roosevelt’s house on the Estate. Also, visit the Vanderbilt Mansion, a National Historic Site. You are sure to enjoy its 211 acres of park land that boast centuries old tree plantings and stunning Hudson River and Catskill Mountain views.

Visit Kykuit, home to four generations of the Rockefeller family. Kykuit displays magnificent expansive garden terraces, garden ornaments and many fountains, as well as spectacular views of the Hudson Valley. Also, see its private art collection. After lunch in Sleepy Hollow, we will arrive at Sunnyside, the home of US historical figure & famous author Washington Irving, for a tour before arriving in New York City.

This morning discover the incredible plants at the New York Botanical Gardens where there will be time to wander on your own and enjoy lunch. Depart New York City to Wilmington. En route, we stop off in an Amish village in Lancaster, Pennsylvania before arriving at the opulent and historic Du Pont Hotel.

Spend the morning at Longwood Gardens. With 20 outdoor display gardens, as well as lakes, meadows and forest walks, there is plenty to explore. Winterthur's 60-acre naturalistic garden is among America's best, with magnificent specimen plantings and massed displays of colour.

Depart Wilmington and visit Nemours Mansion, owned by the Du Pont family. On a special guided tour discover rare French antique furniture, artworks and tapestries throughout its 100 plus rooms. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.
